CBD DOSAGE FACTORS

If you’re new to using CBD, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. With so many different ways to consume, from oil to wax to capsules, how can you know you’re taking the right amount? Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for the right dose for you.

NOT REGULATED BY THE FDA

The first thing to remember is that there’s no established Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since there is no official serving size, you should proceed carefully.

BODY WEIGHT

One of the most important factors to consider is your body weight. The more body mass you have, the more substance you’ll need to consume to feel its effects. A good place to start is to calculate 1 mg of CBD per 10 pounds, then gradually increase the dose if necessary, up to a maximum of 6 mg per 10 pounds.

CONCENTRATION

Once you’ve determined the amount of milligrams you should be taking, it’s time to figure out how many milligrams of CBD are in your product of choice. If you’re lucky, the packaging may say exactly how many milligrams the bottle contains, but sometimes the amount is written as a percentage. This is especially common with liquids.

This percentage is the CBD concentration, which means you have to do a little math to determine the milligrams of CBD in each dropper, capsule, etc. To do this, multiply the amount in the dropper by a decimal representation of the percentage. For example, if a bottle is 10 percent CBD and the dropper holds 5 milligrams, you then multiply 5 mg by 0.1 to get 0.5 mg.

BODY CHEMISTRY

Everyone reacts to substances differently. This is true whether the substance in question is a prescription pill or an essential oil. You don’t know how you’ll metabolize the CBD until you’ve tried it.

Also keep in mind that how you consume CBD can influence how quickly you feel the effects. For example, many people place oil under their tongues so it will be absorbed into the blood stream faster. This can mean effects manifest sooner compared to an individual who swallows a capsule, since a capsule must be digested before it enters the blood stream.

Your dosage also depends on the severity of your medical condition. If you’re taking CBD to combat pain, for instance, your dosage should correspond with your level of pain.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CBD CONCENTRATIONS

Finding the right dose may mean some trial and error before you find the amount that works for you. However, there are some tips you can keep in mind, such as:

  • Start with the minimum dose and gradually increase
  • Utilize accurate resources like physicians for guidance
  • Look for capsules, gummies or edibles if you prefer a clearly measured milligram amount

Most of all, don’t allow other users to pressure you into trying more or less. What’s important is what works for you – not them.
